Summary
- Ryan Murphy hinted at American Horror Story season 13 with Sarah Paulson starring, bringing hope for fans.
- Fans want season 13 to be genuinely scary, avoid two-part releases, and focus on one strong storyline.
- Some fans are patient and hope for quality over speed.
Since American Horror Story was renewed for three seasons in January 2020, fans thought that season 13 would be released fairly soon after Delicate wrapped up in spring 2024. I was disappointed along with several other viewers to find out that season 13 hasn't been officially "ordered," as Eric Schrier, the President of Disney Television Studios, shared with Deadline back in May. But, since Schrier said that a new season could be made as soon as Murphy was ready and had a fun, creative idea, I held out hope for more scary episodes.
Now, after Ryan Murphy gave fans a new update on American Horror Story season 13, I'm feeling better about the future of the creepy anthology series. I still think that the next season should be the last one, and I have some ideas about how the show can improve.
American Horror Story Season 13 Should Be Inspired By The Best American Horror Stories Episode
American Horror Story season 13's plot hasn't been shared, and it could take cues from a memorable and scary American Horror Stories episode.
Ryan Murphy's Brief American Horror Story Season 13 Update Makes Me Hopeful (And Here's How It Can Fix Some Past Issues)
A few days ago, Ryan Murphy posted about his upcoming TV drama American Love Story on his social media, and a fan asked about American Horror Story season 13. According to Deadline, Murphy wrote:
“Sarah Paulson and I are cooking up something cool!”
This is great news as it suggests that the next season is definitely happening, and it also confirms that Sarah Paulson will star in it. While it's a shame that Jessica Lange won't appear in the new season, it's exciting to hear that Paulson, a staple of the anthology series, will be back.
However, no matter how happy I am to hear Murphy talk about working on another season, I have a few reservations. I think that American Horror Story season 13 needs to avoid three common problems that the last few seasons have had. The season should all be released at once as I think fans are growing tired of two-part releases. The season should also follow the same storyline rather than two plotlines. That was the mistake that Double Feature made, and I don't think it paid off as many viewers liked "Red Tide" more than "Death Valley."
I also think that season 13 needs to be genuinely scary. While Delicate had some creepy moments and an unforgettable cliffhanger, it's hard to say that it was frightening. My all-time favorite season was Murder House as it's a powerful and unsettling examination of the haunted house trope. The ghosts and villains in season 1 creeped me out, and I'd love to see season 13 focus on another haunted mansion or property.
Some Fans Are Okay With The Long Wait For American Horror Story Season 13
While it's never fun to wait for another season of a beloved TV show, some fans are fine to wait for American Horror Story season 13 if they get a solid batch of episodes. In a Reddit thread about the fact that the upcoming season hasn't started filming and isn't officially in production, Redditor @kcrrck wrote:
"I am fine with the long wait if it’s something GREAT!"
Redditor @iCantLogOut2 added:
"Here's hoping the extra time means better plots."
Redditor @Rhianna83 shared their thoughts in another Reddit thread and echoed what many fans have said: Delicate was disappointing, and hopefully season 13 will be more memorable. The fan wrote:
"If it needs to go the Black Mirror route (it’s released when there’s stories to tell), I’m fine with it. After doing a few of the older season rewatches recently, I’m ok waiting for something great than getting something like Delicate again."
While Stephen King loved Delicate' s big cliffhanger, many fans felt the pregnancy storyline had been done before, and wished that season 12 reflected earlier seasons like Coven or Freak Show. Realistically, the earliest that fans could see American Horror Story season 13 is late 2026 or early 2027, depending on when production starts. I'll definitely be ready to tune in.
