Summary

  • AMD is planning to release new enthusiast-tier GPUs in the Radeon RX 7000 series this quarter, expanding their RDNA 3 lineup.
  • The upcoming GPUs, believed to be the RX 7700 and RX 7800, will fill the mid-range gap in AMD's offerings, targeting a more affordable market.
  • AMD's decision to classify these GPUs as enthusiast-class suggests there may not be any new ultra-enthusiast offerings in the RX 7900 series later this year.

AMD is planning to release “new, enthusiast-tier GPUs” in the Radeon RX 7000 series this quarter. CEO Lisa Su shared the rough timeline during a Q2 2023 Earnings Call, revealing that the RDNA 3 lineup of graphics cards is on track to expand with enthusiast-class GPUs. These are believed to be the Radeon RX 7700 and the RX 7800. It must be noted that AMD is categorizing its upcoming GPUs as “enthusiast”, rather than the previously used “ultra-enthusiast” moniker for its RX 7900 series of graphics cards, indicating a shift towards more mid-range markets than their predecessors.

Late last year, AMD unveiled its Radeon RX 7000 series of GPUs to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 40 series. However, at the time, the company only introduced two GPUs to the public: the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. As these were the top-tier cards meant to compete with the RTX 4070/Ti and RTX 4080, the company released the RX 7600 in May of this year as the entry-level budget-friendly offering. This left a major gap in the middle and ever since, fans of Team Red have been eagerly waiting for more mid-range offerings.

The Gigabyte Radeon RX 7600 Gaming OC is a triple-fan dual-slot graphics card that brings Gigabyte's effective WINDFORCE cooling technology. It has three 80mm fans with alternate spinning that work alongside the five composite copper heat pipes that directly touch the GPU. The GPU uses the highest-grade metal chokes, 2oz copper PCB, lower ESR solid capacitors, and lower RDS(on) MOSFETs, among other features.

AMD's Flagship RX 7900XTX is a behemoth that trades blows with Nvidia's RTX 4080 and sometimes the RTX 4090 and regularly comes out ahead versus the former.

With 24GB of GDDR6X memory and the latest in connectivity thanks to support for Displayport 2.1 backed by one of the best cooling designs we have seen on a GPU, the XFX Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX Black 24G is a force to be reckoned with.

It is a marked improvement on everything that makes the 7900XTX such a potent performer, but better and faster than the stock unit.

Now, finally, the company has confirmed that there are new GPUs on the horizon. Company CEO Lisa Su reportedly stated during a Q2 2023 Earnings Call, “In gaming graphics, we expanded our Radeon 7000 GPU series in the second quarter with the launch of our mainstream RX 7600 cards for 1080p gaming. We are on track to further expand our RDNA 3 GPU offerings with the launch of new, enthusiast-class Radeon 7000 series cards in the third quarter.”

It is believed that she is referring to the gap in the RDNA 3 lineup between the RX 7600 and the RX 7900 XT. This means the Radeon RX 7700 and RX 7800, or an “XT” model of the same, could arrive before the end of September. This comes as exciting news for Team Red fans who have been waiting for something in the mid-tier segment, even more so now, considering the leaked pricing for the two expected cards. The RX 7700 could cost $449, while the RX 7800 could launch for $549. This puts the cards right between the $257 RX 7600 (the cheapest model at the time of writing) and the $750 RX 7900 XT.

The upcoming lineup could include either just the RX 7700 and RX 7800, or have XT as well as XTX versions of the two. If so, the latter could then fill in the remaining gaps in the lineup, as far as pricing is concerned.

Furthermore, AMD is classifying these GPUs as “enthusiast-class,” which may indicate that there are not going to be any new offerings in the “ultra-enthusiast” RX 7900 series of cards later this year. For now, the company does not have a GPU that competes with the RTX 4090, and even its top-tier RTX 7900 XTX offers performance numbers similar to the RTX 4080, a fact that the chipmaker seems to imply is a design decision based on where they felt the market is for their products.

The company recently launched a tweaked version of the RX 7900 XT, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition). It originally launched in China but will make its way to the global market through system integrators. It features 16GB VRAM, which is lower than the standard RX 7900 XT's 20GB. Additionally, it has 84 RDNA 3 compute units (powered by dual 8-pin connectors), has an ARGB header, a Fan-In connector, and a BIOS switch. Interestingly, the Navi 31 package present on the RX 7900 GRE is physically smaller than the ones present on the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. There are some other physical differences in the GPUs as discovered by TechPowerUp. While this GPU is exclusive to the Chinese market, AMD has major plans with its RDNA 3 lineup globally.
