Years after its full release, the popular multiplayer survival game Rust manages to maintain its high player count with constant updates that add fresh mechanics and threats to its post-apocalyptic world. The most recent update saw a massive overhaul to Rust's cooking system. Facepunch introduced a deployable cooking workbench, chicken coops, honey bees, and a new wheat crop, which have unlocked a variety of new food recipes, including pies.

Pies now join teas as consumable items that survivors can brew or bake to benefit from their unique temporary status effects. These buffs range from health boosts to increased ore yield and even night vision. Pies require rare ingredients which make baking them costly, so it's important to know which are worth the effort. Here is a ranking of all the pies in Rust based on their individual buffs.

Rust unspoken rules
The Unwritten Rules Of Rust

Players new to Rust may be interested in these unwritten rules that underscore the game.

With this cooking update, meat now decays over time, so players must act quickly to craft their pies before ingredients spoil, or wire up a fridge for long-term storage.

7 Fish Pie

Improves Player's Comfort Levels, High Crafting Cost

Fish Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 1 Cooked Fish, 3 Eggs, 3 Wheat, 2 Potatoes, 2 Mushrooms
  • Unique Boost: Increases Base Comfort level by 25% for 10 minutes

Made from cooked fish, eggs, wheat, potatoes, and mushrooms, the Fish Pie offers a 25% boost to base comfort for 10 minutes. Comfort is a status effect that enables natural health regeneration if a player's food and water levels are high enough.

Heat sources, chairs, bear rugs, and now Fish Pies boost comfort levels, allowing players to passively heal without needing to consume lots of meds or food. While it can help regenerate HP, the Fish Pie suffers from an expensive crafting cost, especially considering the marginal quality-of-life improvement it offers.

6 Hunter's Pie

Reduces Bleeding, But Is Expensive To Craft

Hunter's Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 2 Cooked Deer Meat, 3 Eggs, 3 Wheat, 2 Potatoes, 2 Mushrooms
  • Unique Boost: Reduces Bleeding by 75% for 15 minutes

The Hunter's Pie requires a lot of rare ingredients to craft, though some players may feel its combat ability justifies this high cost. The Hunter's Pie reduces the punishing bleeding status effect, aiding players' survival.

DLC packs added a great deal of flavor and variety to Rust, but these packs stood out the most for what they brought to the game.

Bleeding makes a player lose health faster, which makes the Hunter's Pie particularly useful during PvP combat encounters. The reduced bleeding damage improves healing speed, which is a significant advantage that can determine which player walks away from a gunfight.

5 Chicken Pie

Offers Better Crop Farming Odds

Chicken Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 3 Cooked Chicken, 3 Corn, 3 Eggs, 3 Wheat
  • Unique Boost: Increases the chance of better Crop Genes for 5 minutes

Farms in Rust provide passive income, food sustainability, and much-needed hemp/cloth for meds, and the recent crafting overhaul has made farming even more important, with the demand for crops increasing. Thankfully, the Chicken Pie makes starting a farm easier. For players trying to develop 'god clones' of hemp and berries, this Chicken Pie will make that process a little easier thanks to the buff it provides to Crop Genes.

4 Apple Pie

Boosts Night Vision, But Requires Rare Ingredients

Apple Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 2 Apples, 2 Wheat, 2 Jars of Honey
  • Unique Boost: Enhances Night Vision by 100% for 15 minutes

This Apple Pie is one of the most valuable pies in Rust. Apples are found exclusively in food crates, making them frustratingly rare compared to other ingredients. However, this scarcity is a justified balancing choice given the strategic value Apple Pie provides.

Along with its general boost to hunger, health, and hydration, the Apple Pie provides 100% better vision at nighttime, making the X tree markings and node hotspots visible in the dark for 15 minutes. This unique stat provides an especially strong advantage to players farming at night who don't want to risk valuable night vision goggles.

3 Pork Pie

Improves Healing Rate, Ideal for PvP

Pork Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 2 Cooked Pork, 3 Eggs, 3 Wheat
  • Unique Boost: Improves Healing Rate from other sources for 15 minutes

Pork Pie is another consumable item that is perfect for PvP scenarios. The Pork Pie increases the effectiveness of healing sources, boosting the player's healing rate. After consuming this pie, players' health regeneration can outpace bleeding damage by a significant amount, meaning players will be able to recover much faster during a fight.

Rust: The Rarest Skins
Rust: The Rarest Skins

Rust has a variety of rare skins that players would be lucky to snag.

Pork Pie boosts metabolism by 200%, effectively tripling all gradual healing effects for 15 minutes . If combined with the Large Med Kit, which provides progressive healing back to 100 health, this pie allows players to quickly bounce back after taking nearly lethal damage.

2 Pumpkin Pie

Boosts Player's Max Health

Pumpkin Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 3 Eggs, 3 Wheat, 1 Pumpkin
  • Unique Boost: Increases Maximum Health by 10 for 15 minutes

Pumpkins are one of the best food items in Rust, beloved for their high calories, high hydration, and healing properties. It's fitting, then, that the Pumpkin Pie temporarily boosts maximum health. The Pumpkin Pie adds 10 HP to a player's max health for 15 minutes, an advantage which can be even stronger when combined with armor.

The seasonal Pumpkin Pie requires pumpkins, eggs, and wheat to craft, a small price for the massive return the pie provides to a player's health.

The max health effects of Pumpkin Pie and Max Health Teas do not stack. Only the stronger of the two buffs will apply, so players should refrain from using both at the same time.

1 Bear Pie

Doubles The Impact Of Harvesting Teas

Bear Pie Rust
  • Ingredients: 3 Cooked Bear Meat, 3 Wheat, 2 Mushrooms, 2 Eggs
  • Unique Boost: Doubles Tea Effects but halves their duration

The Bear Pie is the most rewarding pie that survivors can consume. Best paired with high-value teas, the Bear Pie doubles the effect of harvesting teas but halves their duration.

The Bear Pie shines the most when combined with the Pure Ore Tea. Using this combo, players can stack their farming buffs and increase the sulfur yield to 525 per node compared to a base yield of 300. While this pie is relatively pricey to craft, it is well worth it to drastically boost resource farming for raids or base upkeep.
