Summary

  • Over the past two decades, the number of Legendary and Mythical Pokemon in the series has grown significantly.
  • Keeping track of all of the Legendary and Mythical Pokemon can be a challenge as they span multiple generations.
  • Every Legendary Pokemon has unique strengths, weaknesses, and base stats that help to set them apart from each other.

When the Pokemon series first arrived on North American shores back in 1998, Mythical and Legendary Pokemon were few and far between. Fast forward two decades or so, however, and there are now 77 Legendaries and 23 Mythical Pokemon, which, unsurprisingly, perhaps, can sometimes make it a little tricky to keep track of them all.

Zekrom, Mewtwo and Groudon
Pokemon: Every Generation, Ranked By Their Legendaries

Though each Legendary Pokemon has its strengths and weaknesses, some of the Legendaries introduced throughout the series are far better than others.

Indeed, with a combined total of 100, these once-rare creatures now make up almost 10% of the total number of Pokemon in existence, with the majority of them featuring across multiple generations of Pokemon games. This list contains each and every one of them, as well as information about their types, base stats, and the games in which players have been able to catch them.

Updated December 12, 2025, by Tom Bowen: Although there were no new Mythical or Legendary Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A or its Mega Dimension expansion, players are able to catch 25 of the existing ones. This list has been updated to include these additional appearances.
