The cult classic indie game series Alien Hominid is finally coming to current-gen consoles as the developer, The Behemoth, has revealed plans for upcoming HD ports for the PS4 and PS5. There is still no information about a release date, but the studio did confirm that both Alien Hominid games are on their way, so fans and new players alike will have a complete experience when it eventually releases.
Alien Hominid is a 2D side-scroller and action shooter that puts players in the role of a small alien creature blasting its way to freedom from government agents seeking to contain it. The game initally released as a flash game on Newgrounds in 2002 before its console debut in 2004 and later got a sequel, Alien Hominid Invasion, in 2023, which never made it to PlayStation.
Alien Hominid is Making a Comeback
The Behemoth reveals that beloved early 2000s side-scroller Alien Hominid is getting a remake that will reintroduce the game to a modern audience.
Fortunately for PlayStation fans, though, they will finally be able to get their hands on the Alien Hominid duology, as The Behemoth announced HD ports of both games for the PS4 and PS5 on its Twitter account today. The studio announced the games alongside a piece of art depicting a bunch of identical humans holding up a PS5 Dualsense controller.
Alien Hominid's Return is a Good Sign for The Behemoth
In the replies to its announcement tweet, The Behemoth also confirmed plans for a modern re-release of the platforming arcade game BattleBlock Theater, though it did not provide any further details. If the game appears on PlayStation consoles, it would also be the first time it has seen release on the platform, and would mark the final game from The Behemoth that has not received a modern port.
The Behemoth's most popular game, Castle Crashers, became a cult favorite among indie game fans when it released in 2008, and is available on every platform, even receiving an HD remaster that includes all available DLC. Castle Crashers is the game that likely put the studio on the map for many fans, with its combination of 2D side-scrolling, dry humor, and a light RPG mechanics that gave it plenty of replay value.
Many of these elements carried over from Alien Hominid, namely the game's sense of humor and 2D level designs that The Behemoth eventually became known for across its career. The titular alien even appears as one of the many playable characters in Castle Crashers, and the game has an entire level dedicated to Alien Hominid, implying that the two may be set within the same world.
Sony's PlayStation 5 is part of the ninth console generation and debuted with a launch lineup that included Demon's Souls and Astro's Playroom. The console comes with a Blu-ray disc, although a digital-only edition is also available for a cheaper price.
