How to Find Herd Animals

In Age of Mythology: Retold, herd animals will continue to eat, increasing their Food output. On top of this, the player is able to control the herd animals as long as they're closest to one of their Town Centers. These two conditions put together are what makes animal husbandry a Food source worthwhile in Age of Mythology: Retold.

To find herd animals on the Age of Mythology: Retold map, gamers have to scout the nearby surroundings. Herd animals appear on the mini-map as the player's civilization color if they're close enough to their settlement to be considered herdable. If that's the case, then gamers can select the animals and send them back to base. Here are the herdable animals players should be looking out for:

  • Pigs
  • Goats
  • Cows

How to Herd Animals

Once players have discovered a few herd animals near their Town Centers, it's time to start gathering them and fattening them up.

As mentioned before, players will want to select the animals and place them near a location where they can be harvested for Food, such as a Town Center or a Granary. There is a yellow meter above their heads, and as soon as it's filled, it means that the animal can't continue to increase its weight and it's as valuable as it can be. Therefore, it's ready to be slaughtered.

To increase their town's yields from herdable animals, gamers will want to use the Granary to research Husbandry, which provides the following improvements:

  • Herd animals fatten faster (25% fatten speed)
  • Villagers gather Food from herd animals faster (10% work rate)
  • Villagers carry more Food (+15 carry capacity)
