Summary

  • MCU is casting for Prince T'Challa, Black Panther's son, instead of replacing Chadwick Boseman.
  • Rumored actors like Boyega, Idris, and Oyelowo turned down the role of Prince T'Challa.
  • Boyega was likely considered as Marvel's first choice but declined to avoid stepping in for Boseman.

Things are moving pretty fast in the world of the MCU and the next Black Panther movie. There was some talk that Kevin Feige and company might be going down a road that was viewed as widely unpopular. However, the new buzz is that the MCU is instead looking to offer up a new Black Panther than an actor playing the same character that Chadwick Boseman made famous.

Instead of replacing Boseman entirely, it appears that the MCU is now casting instead for Prince T'Challa, the MCU Black Panther's son. That move would be more in line with what Marvel execs have said since Boseman passed away from cancer. It would also seem to be more in line with what fans want, as the character has been one that fans don't want to see played by another actor.

The Black Panther Role Is Getting Hard To Fill

Despite the fact that initial talk that Marvel might be recasting and instead is casting for Black Panther's son, it appears that the part is one some actors are rumored to be wary of taking. According to those reports, there are in fact three different actors that have been approached about playing Prince T'Challa that have all turned down the job. YouTuber She_Dreadzme said that John Boyega (the Star Wars sequel trilogy), Damson Idris (Snowfall, Swarm) and David Oyelowo (Selma, Silo) have all been approached according to that YouTuber's industry contacts and all three have said they don't want to join the MCU in that capacity.

Boyega and Idris are young enough that it wouldn't be hard to believe that they might fit into the MCU as an aged up Prince T'Challa, though one wonders how they're the MCU timelines would work with any of those actors taking on the role considering that the prince was very, very young when he first appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Oyelowo, who is 48-years-old, would seem to have aged out of any role unless there's going to be quite the jump in years or some other explanation for Prince T'Challa being quite old.

It is of course, possible that Marvel might have been approaching these actors for the new role, or as a recasting both, before Marvel reportedly decided it was leaving the idea of a recasting behind. Of the three, it would seem as though Boyega might have been Marvel's first choice, considering he was also someone who came very close to winning the John Stewart role in Lanterns. However, according to these reports, he doesn't want to be seen as stepping for Boseman.

It's not clear exactly how long Marvel has to find T'Challa. There's a chance that the character could be slated to appear in the next Avengers movie. However, what does seem clear is that the character will make an appearance in Black Panther 3. There isn't much known about what the plot of that project will be, though it seems it could be all about unveiling the next man to carry the mantle of Protector of Wakanda.
