Summary
- A Quiet Place franchise struggles with plot holes, like the Abbotts' decision to have a baby in a world of noise-hunting aliens.
- Fans point out inconsistencies like aliens attacking randomly and why white noise isn't used against them.
- The eerie world created in A Quiet Place continues in sequels, focusing on survival and dangerous encounters with sound-hungry aliens.
In 2018, the horror movie A Quiet Place told an emotionally gripping and scary story about a family dealing with an apocalypse created by aliens who hunt whenever they hear sound. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt played Lee and Evelyn Abbott, parents who do their best to keep their kids safe while traveling through this creepy new world. While some horrors sequels like They Follow are filled with fun, creative ideas, others don't have a clear POV. A Quiet Place 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One may be entertaining, but the more fans think about them, the more confusing moments they find in each movie.
While A Quiet Place is a strong self-contained story, the plot falls apart a little in the sequel and prequel, which proves that there are too many obvious plot holes in this franchise.
What Are The Plot Holes In A Quiet Place?
The main plot hole in A Quiet Place that fans focus on is Evelyn and Lee deciding to have another baby. While the loss of Beau (Cade Woodward) is devastating, audiences are confused that they would get pregnant when they know that creatures hunt by sound and babies cry loudly, especially for the first few months. Although this plot point speaks to Evelyn and Lee's love for each other and their strong family unit, it does bring up some questions that haven't been answered.
There are other plot holes or moments that don't make much sense in A Quiet Place, and fans have pointed them out in various Reddit threads. Redditor @FierceLoudChaos wrote about the scene when Lee decides that he will die so he can save his family. While John Krasinski, who starred in the action-packed Jack Ryan and is always engaging on screen, does a great job, this is a frustrating scene. The fan wrote:
"my main gripe with the movie when one of the monsters is attacking the truck with the kids in it Dad sacrifices himself, why not throw something or multiple things to distract the monster
Redditor @UltimaGabe thinks there is a way for the characters in A Quiet Place to get around the fact that the aliens hunt by sound. Of course, in order for the franchise to work, audiences need to believe that the world had to end and there was no way for the characters to beat the aliens at their own game. But it does seem like people would have figured out how to live with these aliens and still maintain some semblance of society. There must be technology that can be used. The fan wrote:
"The thing that really gets me is how incredibly easy it would be to just play white noise or something over loudspeakers, completely negating any need to be quiet."
While the ending of A Quiet Place sets up a sequel well, the confusing rules of the aliens continue in A Quiet Place 2. Redditor @Anonymous_Otters wrote:
"The creatures don't really follow the rules established. What causes them to attack is wildly inconsistent. I still don't understand why they can't hear breathing or heart beats or birds. I don't understand why people can now openly talk with creatures right outside a window."
While there are many strong horror movie about creatures, like Blumhouse's Sweetheart for example, there are several that are frustrating to watch because the monsters act so inconsistently. If the creatures don't follow the rules set out for them, then audiences focus on that instead of the main plot. The aliens in A Quiet Place are still scary and no one would want to be around them, but they can be confusing.
What Happens In The A Quiet Place Franchise?
While A Quiet Place sets up this creepy and dangerous world and introduces the Abbott family as the main survivors, the sequel A Quiet Place 2 focuses on Evelyn's desire to keep her children safe. The Abbot family isn't in the prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, which shares the first 24 hours of this new world. A Quiet Place: Day One tells the story of Eric (Joseph Quinn) and Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) in New York City. After getting to the end of A Quiet Place: Day One, fans wonder if there will be a fourth movie.
While each of the three movies is slightly different, one thing remains the same: the fact that these aliens hunt by sound, which has ruined life as people know it. In an interview with IndieWire, director Michael Sarnoski talked about the terror behind these creatures. Sarnoski said:
“There is something simple and fundamental about that that everyone can relate to. I didn’t want to overshare to the point where they just became these scary, clawy creatures, but at the same time we wanted to hit that scope and scale of ‘this is a large invasion, and there are herds of these things in this very loud city."
