A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 2 Recap & Spoilers
The Tourney at Ashford Meadow finally kicks off in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 2.
The Targaryens are more than their brother-sister marriages, silver-platinum hair, and striking blue or purple eyes. While the average Westerosi may despise their odd customs, House Targaryen has made many contributions to the world they live in. They also have far more at stake, burdened by duty to the realm, and oddly, visions that allow them to foresee. Surprisingly, there lies one such dreamer in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Egg's brother, Daeron.
Some Targaryens Are Prone to Dragon Dreams
The Targaryens are blessed, or cursed, with extraordinary abilities. One such figure is Daenys the Dreamer, who foresaw the end of Valyria 12 years ahead of the cataclysm and forewarned her father, Lord Aenar Targaryen. Heeding her prophetic dream, Aenar chose to relocate his household, slaves, wealth, and five dragons to the island of Dragonstone before the Doom struck Valyria.
House of the Dragon says that Aegon I Targaryen was driven to take Westeros because of yet another powerful dream, one he named A Song of Ice and Fire. He foresaw death descending upon the world, heralded by a Great Winter rising in the distant North, with absolute darkness riding out of those icy winds. He was convinced that this threat would only be faced through the unification of the independent kingdoms of Westeros, the formation of a realm, ruled by a Targaryen seated upon the Iron Throne, the only power capable of protecting the realm against darkness and death. Aegon’s dream, which he had inscribed in his Valyrian Steel Dagger:
From my blood come the Prince That Was Promised, and his shall be the Song of Ice and Fire.
George R.R. Martin Reveals He’ll Write More Game of Thrones Stories ‘If I Have The Time’
GRRM confirmed "there’s more stories to tell about Dunk and Egg, and their education, and what’s going to befall them in future years."
In Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen is shown experiencing in the House of Undying, while in the spin-off, House of the Dragon, her ancestor, Helaena, is portrayed as a dragon dreamer who mutters cryptic prophecies such as “he’ll have to close an eye,” and “there’s a beast beneath the boards.” Both are later proved true, with Aemond Targaryen losing an eye before claiming Vhagar, and the upheaval caused by Princess Rhaenys and Meleys emerging from the floor of the Dragonpits during Aegon II’s coronation.
Daeron Targaryen is the Latest in a Long Line of Targaryen Prophets
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms introduces another dragon dreamer, this time a drunkard and deeply unsettling person who looks like he is plagued by what he knows. Viewers get a glimpse of Maekar Targaryen’s eldest, Daeron, in Episode 1 “The Hedge Knight." Daeron saw Dunk in a dragon dream and was able to recognize him at the inn on the way to Ashford.
I dreamed of you. [Pulls out his knife] Stay the f*** away from me. You hear?
Upon hearing these words, Dunk asks, “My Lord?” And watches Daeron exit the inn. Located roughly a day’s ride from Ashford, the setting perfectly sets up Daeron as the Targaryen who is always lost in a drunken stupor. Just as the lore states, he has taken to drinking to numb the weight of his relentless dragon dreams. Daeron gets up from his stool and is not seen again until A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4 “Seven" where he claims his dreams have turned true.
In another scene, Princes Baelor and Maekar are heard discussing the missing Prince Daeron, who Lord Ashford suggests has merely been delayed. It turns out that Maekar commanded Daeron to enter the lists at Ashford and that he had run away from competing before. Maekar is deeply disappointed in his eldest and is certain that he will only turn up after the Ashford tourney concludes.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Quietly Confirms 28 Year Old Game of Thrones Theory
28 years after The Hedge Knight's release, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 1 quietly confirmed Dunk was not knighted by Ser Arlan of Pennytree.
More on Daeron is revealed in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3 “The Squire.” He and Egg departed Summerhall a week earlier, but never reached Ashford. Maekar forced Daeron to enter the lists, but Daeron instead hid at the inn with his assigned squire and youngest brother, Egg/Aegon. He had even shaved Egg’s head to make him look a little less Targaryen. He was eventually located by his father in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4 "Seven," in which he spun a tale about Egg's kidnapping.
Daeron had lied to Maekar about Duncan, casting him as “a huge robber knight” who had fled with Aegon/ Egg. That said, Daeron came to his senses sooner rather than later and apologized to Duncan for his lie. He also admitted to having dragon dreams and promised to merely stand in the seven in the Trial of Seven that his brother Aerion demanded. He gave Duncan his word that he would not actively try to defeat him.
Daeron did not enjoy a good reputation in his lifetime. Raymun Fossoway describes Daeron as a “sot,” implying that his drinking clearly defines him. Martin’s lore says that upon Maekar’s ascension, Prince Daeron became the Prince of Dragonstone, noting that he wasn’t much of a knight and that he was plagued by prophetic dreams that eventually consumed him and led to his death.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is available to stream on HBO Max.
