What Happens At The End Of 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 14, "Sick Day?"

Athena and Buck on 9-1-1

At the end of 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14, "Sick Day," the 118 team works on helping people escape the lab that turns into a biohazard after a brutal fire. Bobby, Chimney, and Hen are stuck in the lab after an explosion, and Athena and Buck try to figure out how to save them.

US Army Infectious Diseases expert Colonel Hartman (Rick Worthy) shows up to explain that if the 118 team gets the virus, they will have tachycardia and start to bleed. They will also have a fever and feel confused and, then, could get organ failure.

Horror movie star Jennifer Love Hewitt's character, Maddie Hen, is a strong-willed 9-1-1 operator who often helps people get out of dangerous or messy situations, and she doesn't disappoint in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14. Maddie stays on the line with the team, and the situation becomes more dire when it's going to take two hours to create a tunnel to help the team escape. Unfortunately, Hen's lung is collapsed, and she needs a chest tube in ten minutes or she won't be able to breathe anymore.

Chimney shines in this scene as he can't put a chest tube in Hen because she could get the virus, too. Chimney tells Bobby how to do the procedure, which feels like a scary and fast-paced scene out of the Max medical drama The Pitt. The chest tube works, but since Chimney is coughing and short of breath, the storyline continues to be terrifying. Chimney tries to stay calm and positive even in this scary moment when he tells Maddie:

“Hey, honey, not sure I’m going to make it home for dinner. I think I picked up a little bug at the office.”

Athena wants to know "what's really in that lab" and it's revealed that a scientist named Moira (Bridget Regan) "sped up the incubation period" for the virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever antidote, and was then fired. Dr. Francis Banting (Sean T. Krishnan) has decided they can't save the 118 team members because it's too dangerous for the virus to get out. Angela Bassett, once again, gives a strong performance when Athena is stunned and devastated to hear that she could lose her husband Bobby and her teammates. Although fans know Athena has gotten the team out of many terrifying situations straight out of a horrifying slasher movie, this is one of the biggest challenges they're dealt with.

Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) proves he's a courageous character when he goes against the army's wishes and tries to find the cure, but it's missing. Then, the scientist Moira, played by Bridget Regan who has also played a character on The Rookie, is walking in a crowd of people with the antidote that could save Chimney. This is a huge twist typical of Ryan Murphy shows and sets up the next episode well.

Other Big Moments In 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 14, "Sick Day"

Maddie and Chimney with Hen and their families on 9-1-1

Earlier in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14, there is a serious storyline and a more light-hearted one, and viewers appreciate the balance on popular procedurals like NCIS, The Rookie, and 9-1-1. Ravi feels terrible when he helps with a car accident and doesn't see a baby in the car, which makes him consider a career change. Chimney and Maddie also have a gender reveal gathering that goes awry. Jee-Yun (Bailey and Hailey Leung) thinks that Maddie is pregnant with a baby girl, but she is actually expecting a boy.

Since the 118 team is in a dark and grim situation at the end of 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14, "Sick Day," it's hard to imagine how Hen, Chimney, and Bobby can get out, especially since Chimney is so sick. It will be fascinating to see how the team ensures that the terrifying and deadly virus doesn't get out into the world and infect more people in episode 15.
