One Piece is such a long manga/anime series that, to no one’s surprise, it’s filled to the brim with literal thousands of named characters, all with their own unique designs, personalities, motivations, and abilities. As a result, every single fan can make a list with a handful of their favorite key figures in this extensive story (pirates, marines, revolutionaries, etc.)

Did you notice all the Devil Fruits shown in the God Valley flashback?

However, not every One Piece character is made equal, and many of them are actually so unlikable and so unappealing that most fans can’t help but absolutely despise them, no matter whether Eiichiro Oda intentionally designed them to be disliked or not. Needless to say, there are a lot of characters that fans definitely can’t stand, but the following eight are the most infamous examples so far.

Jaygarcia Saturn

The Most Despicable Member Of The Five Elders (So Far)

  • Debut: Chapter 233 (Manga) Episode 151 (Anime)

When the Five Elders were originally introduced back in the Jaya Arc, they came off as generic politicians that just gave orders to the Marines, and not much more. However, as the story slowly revealed more and more information about them (and the World Government in general), it became evident that they were all even worse than fans initially thought, with Saint Jaygarcia Saturn being the most hated one yet.

As the Warrior God of Science and Defense, Saturn is directly responsible for everything bad that happened in Kuma’s and Bonney’s lives: he experimented on Ginny to the point that he gave her a deadly disease, he used Bonney as leverage to manipulate Kuma, and he later chose to turn him into a mindless living weapon. The worst part is that he did all of that without a single drop of remorse, as he sees all regular humans as inferior beings. Fortunately, Imu has already killed Saturn at the end of the Egghead Arc, so he can’t make anyone else suffer now.

Spandam

A Weak And Cowardly “Nepo Baby”

  • Debut: Chapter 355 (Manga) Episode 249 (Anime)

It would be logical to expect the leader of CP9, one of the deadliest agencies in the One Piece world, to be a ruthless and strong assassin, just like most of its members. Unfortunately, that is far from the truth because Spandam is a weak, cowardly, egotistical and arrogant person who only got that position because he’s the son of CP9’s previous leader, Spandine.

Not only did Spandam frame Tom by using Franky’s old battleships, so the master shipwright could be executed, and he could steal Pluton’s blueprints, but he also spent most of the Enies Lobby Arc actively torturing and mocking Nico Robin, while hiding behind people that are way stronger and more efficient than him, like Rob Lucci, Kaku or even his own sword, Funkfreed. Fortunately, Robin managed to break Spandam’s spine at the very end of the arc, in what’s one of the most gratifying moments in the entire series.

Absalom

The Mere Presence Of This Creepy Pervert Brought Down The Thriller Bark Arc

  • Debut: Chapter 444 (Manga) Episode 339 (Anime)

Let’s face it: many characters in One Piece – even some of the most popular ones – are huge perverts; that’s just the type of humor Oda enjoys writing at times. However, most of these perverted characters at least have one or two redeeming qualities to them, whereas Absalom of the Thriller Bark Pirates is completely unlikable all the way through.

Luffy will be the Pirate King, but he isn't the only one with such potential in One Piece.

His first ever appearance sees him use the invisibility powers of his Suka Suka no Mi to literally creep on and assault a naked Nami while she was trying to take a shower. And it doesn’t get better from there, because he spends the rest of the arc acting like a nuisance, and even manages to make Sanji look bad as a result. Most One Piece fans agree that Absalom is the absolute worst part of the Thriller Bark Arc and, fortunately for them, he was recently killed off by the Blackbeard Pirates, who acquired his Devil Fruit powers.

Rosward Charlos

The Perfect Example Of Everything That’s Wrong With The Celestial Dragons

  • Debut: Chapter 499 (Manga) Episode 393 (Anime)

In the world of One Piece, the Celestial Dragons (AKA World Nobles) are basically privileged aristocrats who represent the worst in society: they use bubble-shaped helmets because they don’t want to breathe the same air as everybody else, they give direct orders to Marine Admirals, and they are allowed to enslave anyone they want. While all of them could easily be part of a list like this, Oda needed to more accurately reflect what makes them so detestable, which is why he created Rosward Charlos.

Charlos literally is the worst of the worst, a truly despicable character with zero redeeming qualities: he’s annoying, egotistical, disgusting, spoiled, and repeatedly tries to enslave other people just because he feels like it. Charlos is just so ridiculously unlikable that Oda has written him into situations that conclude with him being attacked by another character (wether it's Luffy, Mjosgard or Sai and Leo), and it’s always incredibly satisfying for the viewer.

Vander Decken IX

A Creepy Minor Antagonist Full Of Untapped Potential

  • Debut: Chapter 606 (Manga) Episode 525 (Anime)

The concept of a fish-man pirate with Devil Fruit powers that commands a ghost ship sounds fascinating at first but, unfortunately, it was completely wasted on Vander Decken IX, a minor antagonist from the Fish-Man Island Arc. Not only is he completely overshadowed by his much stronger ally, Hody Jones, but he’s also very creepy.

Vander Decken IX has been obsessed with Princess Shirahoshi ever since she was a baby and has spent many years stalking her, threatening her and sending her unrequited love letters. While the story eventually tries to explain that he supposedly did all of that because he’s aware of her ability to communicate with Sea Kings and wants to acquire it for himself, this reveal doesn’t really make him come off as any less disgusting or problematic.

Trebol

Doflamingo's Partner In Crime Is Both Lame And Annoying

  • Debut: Chapter 700 (Manga) Episode 629 (Anime)

In terms of morality, Trebol of the Donquixote Family is a truly terrible person, seeing as he directly manipulated Donquixote Doflamingo from a very young age and single-handedly helped him become the ruthless and cruel pirate he is today. However, it’s safe to say that most One Piece fans would ignore that if he at least was an interesting or cool-looking villain (like Kaido or Akainu) but, unfortunately, he’s far from that.

Trebol is, without a doubt, one of the ugliest One Piece characters, which is made even worse by the fact that he has an excruciatingly annoying laugh that he can be heard emitting every single time he’s on-screen. The only relatively positive thing about him was his Devil Fruit, the Beta Beta no Mi, which gives him mucus-based powers that seemed to be versatile and effective, until it was revealed that it isn’t even a Logia, and that he’s actually using the mucus to hide his weak and frail body.

Kurozumi Orochi

A Cruel And Resentful Monarch That Made His Home Country Suffer

  • Debut: Chapter 927 (Manga) Episode 921 (Anime)

Despite being a relatively recent addition to the series, Kurozumi Orochi is already fighting with Spandam and Charlos for the position of most hated One Piece character. After all, he was the shogun of Wano for over twenty-five years and, after forging an alliance with the Beast Pirates, he was directly responsible for making innocent civilians go hungry, poisoning every food and water supply, and enslaving, torturing or murdering anybody who tried to oppose him.

Orochi never really cared for his country, since he felt like they all deserved to suffer because the Kurozumi Family was mostly wiped out due to the actions of one of his ancestors. However, good people like the Kouzuki Family tried to give him a chance, and yet he didn’t hesitate to betray them. To make things even worse, he’s absolutely irritating, and he’s terrible at using the powers of his mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, the Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi. Because of all this, the scene in which Hiyori gets revenge on Orochi and kills him once and for all is incredibly satisfying.

Queen Estrid

The Worst Mother In The Series

  • Debut: Chapter 1153

Curiously enough, Estrid was introduced to the manga very recently, during Loki’s extensive flashback sequence, and she’s already considered one of the worst mothers in the entire series. For starters, she only married King Harald thanks to an arrangement that gave her societal and political power, thus preventing him from being with his one true love, Ida.

But the moment that cemented Estrid as a truly irredeemable character was when she disowned her son, Loki, seconds after he was born just because of his appearance. To make things even worse, she personally threw the newborn baby into Elbaph’s underworld just to get rid of him. And while Estrid eventually died of an illness, she kept ruining the lives of Harald’s family even when she was no longer around, as her relatives poisoned Ida and were directly responsible for her death.
